The Medina
The Medina, in Morocco, is a labyrinth of narrow, winding streets and alleys that are almost maze-like. It is easy to get lost in this difficult layout, but that’s considered part of its charm. It is riddled with markets filled with a plethora of goods and vendors who actively engage with every tourist in the hopes of a sale. Entering the Medina through gateways with their unique character, it is as if you are stepping back in time, offering unique history and culture. This art piece reflects these traits and can be described similarly. Thread strung in various directions distracts the eyes, making it difficult to focus on one aspect of the piece. Diverse colours are placed to mimic the randomness of the Medina, which is also colourful with no set colour palette. The thread confines and expands to produce a flow through the artwork and suggests movement in the same way the gateways, alleys, and streets forcefully direct you through the Medina. This piece is intentionally uncomfortable yet intriguing and distracting, replicating the Medina in Morocco.
